Day 25 – Rose Island

Last night the winds calmed as expected making for another great cockpit sleeping night. We discovered in the morning that Rose Island also has a rooster! We were looking forward to a day in the anchorage, especially given the nice conditions.

After coffee, Tommy used seawater and soap to get the encrusted salt off the pulpit and fore-parts of the boat, and used a miserly fresh water rinse to get the last stickiness off. Paula used some Zephyr to get surface oxidation off the lifelines, as these are the clotheslines too and need to be clean. She also wiped the portholes free of salt.

It is sunny with a nice breeze, now clocking around to the West, spinning C Ghost on her anchor chain and affording us a different view.

The south side of Rose Island has a rocky shore, but there is good depth all the way in.

Some “rocks” visible on the bottom now were in the path to have C Ghost swing right over them as the wind was shifting. Although the depths are between 12 and 16 feet and the rocks are surely well below our hull and prop (we need 5 feet), Tommy kept looking overboard at them. This was the excuse Paula needed to jump in with her mask to check their height. To our delight, we found out that not only were they no higher than 1 to 3 feet off the bottom, they were actually full of coral, sea fans and fish! Paula demanded the waterproof camera we got at Walmart just before leaving St. Augustine, and tried some amateur photography.

There were fish – but small ones.

Tommy took his turn, but seemed as happy and amazed to view and photograph the good condition of C Ghost’s hull and prop as he did the little yellow and gray fish.

Tom snorkeling. These rocks and coral look dark and menacing from above, but most of the features of this grouping are close to the bottom and no danger to the boat.

The prop, as well as the rest of “C Ghost’s” bottom were clean as a whistle. Not too suprising after yesterdays ride.

It wasn’t quite as hazy today and we were able to get a good picture of how some of the Nassau skyline looks from our anchorage.

Nassau is about 5 miles (as the crow flies) from our anchorage.

Feeling generally lazy, we did a few more jobs and then enjoyed the fun of addressing communication and correspondence with friends and family, then rested in the cockpit.

Late this afternoon our anchorage began to get very bouncy with a lot of waves. No good explanation since the wind has been calm all day and is very calm right now. There are a lot of boats in the anchorage at the moment and all are bouncing around. Had a nice dinner of chicken parmesan and Brussel sprouts and ate it inside in the middle of the boat where the motion is less. We leave tomorrow morning for our weekend marina stay which is only an 11 mile trip.
