Featured picture – beautiful downtown Kearney, Nebraska
It was a fairly short drive from Laramie, Wyoming to Kearney, Nebraska. The road remained pretty straight, and we lost about 6,000 feet of elevation during today’s drive. The surroundings changed from mountainous to high plains, with lots of cattle, short grasses, and irrigated land to grow hay, corn, onions, soybeans, and other crops we couldn’t identify. We also saw many small lakes by the highway.
There was a Lincoln Memorial rest station early on to celebrate the Lincoln Highway which was the first automobile highway constructed to traverse the country from San Francisco to New Jersey.
We stopped in a small town at Max’s diner about halfway to Kearney. It was full of memorabilia and folks in jeans and cowboy hats and boots.
Kearney itself had a nice downtown with brick lined streets. There were many nice shops — surprisingly deserted for a Saturday. We learned that the Nebraska Cornhuskers were playing North Dakota — apparently everyone was either at home or at a sports bar watching the game. The Cornhuskers won! Tonight, we ate at Joy’s Steaks and Pasta, another way-too-good meal. Tommy had beef stroganoff and Paula had Steak Au Poivre. Tomorrow will be a shorter drive to Independence, Missouri.
