Cross Country Drives

Memphis, Tennessee

This morning we got up early and had a nice breakfast at a very friendly Waffle House just across the street from our hotel. Then we drove to Memphis, TN and walked up and down Beale Street to stretch our legs.

At about 11 a.m. the place was just waking up. A few shops were open, but the place was clearly meant for nightlife, with many clubs and cafes featuring live music that were closed until later.

This street was old, but with a lot of character.

The streets had musical notes embedded in the sidewalks with musicians’ names on them. The streets were clean and had the air of having just been scraped free of the previous night’s celebratory litter via streetsweeper and broom.

Elvis memorabilia was everywhere, of course. We were lucky to find Schwabs’ open, as it had an old-time soda fountain and we had a mid-morning snack of a strawberry-banana milkshake.

After our treat we resumed travel and now are in our hotel room in Holladay, TN. Tomorrow we should make Asheville.
