Intracoastal Waterway Cruise

Day 33 – Charleston, S.C. (Mile 465)

It was nice to wake up knowing we had a whole day to spend in Charleston. At 8 am the shuttle picked us up and took us to Harris Teeter, along with another boater, and we were able to shop for perishables, and then enjoy a coffee at Starbucks with our full grocery caddy while awaiting the shuttle’s return. The temperature quickly rose from the low 60’s to the high 70’s. Paula prepared and stowed the food, while Tom worked on plotting our routes for the next 160 miles.

We changed into summery clothes and caught the noon shuttle to Charleston. Grabbing a quick lunch, we spent the next four hours walking all over the city. We viewed the harbor from the side opposite our marina, saw many historic homes-some in groups and some peppered among modern buildings.

We walked the length of “The Market” which was like a high tier, multi-block, semi-enclosed flea market. There were a number of tourists, including some from the same German cruise ship we encountered in Norfolk. (Remember the ship with eyes and lips?) We visited the Confederate Museum, which has lots of fragile artifacts from the era of the civil war including flags, clothing, pipes, dolls, and other personal items.

In addition to a full day of touring, we used this stop in Charleston to fill the diesel tank, fill the water tank, stock up on groceries, and do all our laundry. We’re now fully re-provisioned and the weather looks good for leaving tomorrow morning.
