Lake Tahoe

Tahoe 2022 – Week 2

This was another perfect weather week. We enjoyed several outdoor activities: the first was a kayaking trip. Paula was spoiled from having a foot-peddle kayak at home and got an arm workout in the traditional paddle kayaks available at the beach. The lake is remarkable for its rocky bottom and totally clear waters. We had fun paddling and watching the surrounding water sports-jet skis, parasailing, swimming and sail and power boating. The water remains quite shallow until about 300 feet from shore, so at one point we were surprised by a splashing noise from behind, which turned out to be a group of kids, tramping along about 200 feet from the shore.

Week2-16
The week began with a kayak trip in the crystal-clear water just off the south shore of Lake Tahoe.

We spent some time in the mornings and evenings on the deck, and were visited by a variety of wildlife, pictured is a cute little chipmunk. We also regularly see Stellar’s jays, blackbirds, squirrels and ravens.

Week2-18
This guy actually posed for a picture on the railing of the deck of the cabin.

We took a hike on the Echo Lake trail. It consisted of some dirt path, path studded with rocks, and some purely rocky area. It was the most challenging hike Paula had attempted since she got her new knees, and the hiking poles Margeaux and Nestor got her were a big help.

Week2-2
This is the starting point of the Echo Lake trail.
Week2-1
This trail was gorgeous, if a bit technical in parts. It mostly stayed just up off the lake the entire time.
Week2-4
Some of the rock formations along the way were tall and intimidating.
Week2-5
Every so often there would be an odd boulder in the middle of the path.

When we exited the trail, we (Paula) decided to take the water taxi back instead of turning around and doing the hike in reverse. It was very interesting to see the lake from water level and view the varied cabins that line the shore. All are accessible by foot or water only and must provide their own drinking water and electricity.

Week2-9
At the end of the lake trail there was a small boat dock if you wanted to take a “ferry” back instead of hiking back.
Week2-6
The ferry ride was well worth it as you got a very different view of the surroundings from the water.
Week2-8
At various spots around Echo Lake there were cabins built by their owners. These cabins are totally off-the-grid with the owner having to supply their own electricity and water or do without. No roads – the only access is by water or a long hike.
Week2-7
You can see several of these off-grid cabins dotting the hillside.

The flat top grill lent to us by Kyle and Glenny came in handy and was fun and easy to use. We had salmon, asparagus and sauteed onions. The food tasted great and clean-up was a breeze.

Week2-17
In the middle of the week, we tried using the portable “flat-top” grill the Kyle and Glennis brought.
Week2-19
It cooked up a delicious dinner of salmon, asparagus and sauteed onions.

Our second hike this week was to another lakeside trail: Fallen Leaf Lake trail. The featured picture on this post is one of many stunning views of amazing colors on the mountainsides surrounding this lake. The trailhead was located in the middle of a beautiful RV and camping facility. Again, it was fun to see the varied and ingenious ways that folks travel and camp for their summer adventures.

Week2-10
Our next hike was at Fallen Leaf Lake. This is the starting point of the trail.
Week2-11
The mountains surrounding Fallen Leaf Lake were very colorful. Some parts of the trail were right along the beach.
Week2-12
The water near the shore was so clear you could barely even distinguish it.

This trail was less technical and had much more plant growth along the way. Sometimes we had to squeeze thru bushes or climb over big fallen trees. There was a lot of activity on this lake to, with many families parked on the rocky beach and some boats roaming the lake. We hope to do more hiking this trip. It is a good form of exercise, and the surroundings are beautiful.

Week2-14
This trail was a lot more wooded than the Echo Lake trail. Lots of big pine and cedar trees.
Week2-15
Sap dripping from a recently cut tree. Once this stuff gets on you, it stays there for a long time.
