Cross Country Drives

Broomfield, Colorado

Today we were excited to get going as we planned to spend the evening with Tom’s two college roommates, Mark & Sue, who Tom and I haven’t seen in 43 years! They have traveled the globe for work and pleasure and now live in Broomfield, CO.

It was an easy drive as the geography through western Kansas and eastern Colorado is as flat as a pancake and covered with green young corn.

This was the scene for 100’s of miles across the state of Kansas. Straight, flat roads and lots and lots of corn.

We saw lots of silos, and Tommy wondered aloud whether they were filled with grain or ICBMs…too many spy movies for him!

The view changed dramatically as we approached Denver, Colorado.

About 30 miles outside of Denver, we came around a bend in the road and the landscape finally changed. The Rocky Mountains appeared!

Our friends looked little changed by time to our eyes, and we were treated to lots of catching-up anecdotes and a delicious meal Sue prepared; German salad, Tuscan bread, cassoulet, and French strawberry cake. After dinner we walked through the greenway of their neighborhood accompanied by their very sweet and well-trained dog, Lucy. Their cat Trixie is shy but made a brief appearance before dinner in the living room.

Old college roommates 43 years later. The four of us double dated a few times as 20 year-olds.

We slept over with the windows open, listening to the sounds of the breeze and red-winged blackbirds. We departed after tea and coffee, with promises to keep in touch and plan repeat get-togethers.

  1. Loved reading about the reunion of friends after 43 years! It was heart-warming! It made me reflect on my own feelings of friends I’ve lost contact with, who have always remained in my memory and heart. I do believe that people enter our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Glad you all had such a nice time reflecting on happy memories of the past and your friendship! ❤️
