Cross Country Drives

Conway, Arkansas

We again split the driving from Clinton, Oklahoma to Conway, Arkansas over rolling hills bordered by farmland and familiar deciduous trees. We had to take a detour halfway through due to an overturned tractor trailer on Route 40, but we still arrived in Conway at 3PM.

We walked along part of the main drag which was filled with prosperous appearing shops and businesses. Most were closed, but the Blue Sail coffee shop was open. We opened the door into a nest of college students, busy with laptops and ear buds, sipping their javas. Every conceivable gender was represented. We each had an iced mocha, which Paula thinks is just a fancy name for chocolate milk for grown-ups.

A very deserted, but very nice downtown area.

Tommy looked downright binary in this coffee shop.

We never cease to be amazed at the advertising ingenuity of some merchants.

Another look at the quaint downtown area.

This is a college town, and we walked the campus of Hendrix College, a liberal arts college dating from the 1800s. The campus was beautiful with lots of grassy lawns, flower beds, fountains and venerable-looking brick buildings. The campus was virtually uninhabited due to the holiday, and we enjoyed the quiet.

We almost felt studious again (almost).

Many restaurants were closed for the holiday, but the Fuji Hibachi steakhouse was open. We were the only patrons and enjoyed a peaceful and tasty Hibachi meal. As we left, the wind picked up, and a purple thunderhead crept closer across the sky. We got home before the storm, but thunderstorms are predicted for tonight.

This place served great Hibachi dinners.
