Intracoastal Waterway Cruise

Day 42 – Jekyll Island, Ga. (Mile 684)

We never intended to stop here in Jekyll Island on this trip. It only became a destination a couple days ago due to weather and tide conditions along our route. Now here for the 2nd day because of high winds, we can’t believe we didn’t plan a longer stay here. This place is gorgeous. We borrowed a couple bikes from the marina and went on a long ride around the whole Island this morning. Without question the most scenic bike ride we’ve ever taken. We took a lot of pictures during our ride and here is just a sample of how it looked –

ICW-Day42-1
A really nice wide bike path the whole way (about 10 miles). Trees with Spanish moss lined much of the path.

At times it was like we were riding bikes on a movie set. Really pretty.
ICW-Day42-3
We saw very little evidence of hurricane damage here and everything was very nicely manicured.

There were a few side trails along the path that led to different beaches on the Island. Some of them had collections of driftwood that had arranged themselves into mini “forests” on the beach.

ICW-Day42-4
Lots of driftwood on the northern part of the Island. Although it was very windy today, the temperature was perfect for the bike ride.

Behind Tom you can see a little of how the surf was up today. This would have made crossing St. Andrews Sound, just south of Jekyll Island, uncomfortable.

There was another side trail that took us a bit more inland through the marshes on the Island. Here we saw Kingfishers, Sandpipers, Cardinals, Short-Tailed Sparrows, Buzzards, Nuthatches, Bald Eagles, and Herons. But mostly we saw Snowy Egrets – lots of them. Most were camera shy and we couldn’t get too close, but we did get a few good shots.

ICW-Day42-6
The Snowy Egret was the most prevalent bird in the marsh.

We ate lunch in an Irish Pub at the end of our Island bike loop and then toured the historic district in the middle of the Island.

ICW-Day42-7
The Jekyll Island Club. If you look closely at the grassy area behind Tom, you can see a formal Croquet match going on. These guys are actually wearing white uniforms!

We came back to the boat and Paula did a little more advance dinner cooking while Tom watched some college football. This evening we splurged and ate dinner at the Jekyll Island Club.

ICW-Day42-8
It was an awesome dinner!

  1. So beautiful! Al and I were there years ago and remember the lush landscape. Glad Tom got to watch some football!
