Lake Tahoe

2021 – Week 6

This week started out with a fishing charter on the lake that we had booked a few weeks prior. We had no idea what to expect other than to hopefully spend another nice day out on the water. After having cleared a bit the previous evening, the wildfire smoke began to slowly blow in to the Tahoe area again on the day of our charter. It wasn’t bad though and the trip proceeded on schedule.

We were accompanied by two other couples on this charter. Along with the Captain and his mate, there were a total of eight people on the boat. We went out to a deeper part of the lake and began fishing for Kokanee Salmon at a depth of 100 feet down. We had a hugely successful day, catching the maximum limit for the boat of 30 fish. The Captain recommended we take our catch to a local restaurant that would cook them for us and serve up a nice dinner. We did this and it was terrific. It was a great day and we would definitely do this again.

The wind shifted over the next two days to an unfavorable direction which blew a lot of wildfire smoke into the Tahoe basin. This was the first time since we’ve been here that the smoke directly affected our outdoor activities. We spent that time mostly inside catching up on reading.

Glennis and Kyle arrived on Friday for an extended weekend visit since this is our last weekend here (we check out on Saturday morning the 28th). We had an very nice dinner together at a place called “Evans”.

On Saturday (yesterday) we had lunch in the Heavenly Village ski resort area, and walked around to all the local shops and attractions.

Week6-1
This was before we got on the boat. You can see it was a hazy day with some wildfire smoke. The fishing boat is docked at the end of the pier.
Week6-3
The boat was comfortable and there were two other couples besides Paula and I on this charter. Our host were Captain Zack and his crew member Ethan.
Week6-5
Paula and I fished off the back while the other two couples were on each side of the boat. Apart from the smoke haze, the weather was perfect.
Week6-6
Paula landed the first fish of the day with Captain Zack assisting with the net in bringing it onboard.
Week6-7
This was really luxury fishing. The crew “de-hooked” any fish we caught and then put new bait on our hooks.
Week6-8
We caught the same kind of fish all day – Kokanee Salmon. They look small, but this is a fully mature fish. They don’t get much bigger. They live at depths of around 100 feet, so we had to let out a lot of line. The legal limit is five fish per person per day. The six passengers managed to catch our combined limit of 30 fish in about 2 1/2 hours. At the end, Ethan cleaned/gutted all of them and gave us our share in a plastic bag.
Week6-10
We took our catch to a local restaurant called McDuff’s. They took all ten of our fish, filleted and cooked them with three different preparations. They then layered them on top of a big pile of roasted vegetables and french fries. It was absolutely delicious.
Week6-11
Later in the week Glennis and Kyle came back and we went out to a great local restaurant called “Evans”. It was in a small converted house and was very cozy. The owner took our order, and the food was amazing!
