This morning we got a slightly later start as we stopped to have breakfast in our hotel in San Antonio. You can tell we’re in the Lone Star State, as even the waffles were Texas-shaped!

As we headed due west towards our next stop, Fort Stockton Texas, we saw a rapid and significant change in our surroundings. The plant-life became small, scrubby and in some place’s cactus-like, growing out of white pebbly sand. We began to see hills and small mountains made of layers of differently and colored rocks, which gave the appearance of a stony layer cake. We also began to see the giant windmills that we remembered from our trip out west last year.

There were strange mountain formations on our route like this nearly perfectly shaped cone.

Fort Stockton was sprawling, with houses, businesses and hotels located far apart from each other on the sandy ground. There were a lot more hotels than we expected to see in a town of approximately 8000 people, but Tommy reminded me that Fort Stockton was almost the only habitation for 200 miles in each direction. Our hotel, a La Quinta was beautiful and looked brand-spanking new.

We found James Rooney Memorial Park, a large grassy space (someone worked very hard to get that grass to grow and thrive) which also had a giant pool, baseball, basketball, and tennis courts. There was a stage and amphitheater on which a sound system for a band was being set up for 4th of July. Taco trucks were setting up in the parking lot to feed the folks expected to turn out tomorrow for the celebration.

We drove around the remains of Fort Stockton and the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum, both closed, as it’s Sunday. We also viewed the courthouse, the probation office (quite large!) and looked at the RV parks and neighborhoods.

Tonight we went to dinner at K-Bob’s Steakhouse. As soon as we heard the creaking of its large weathervane in the parking lot and saw the rustic exterior, we got a good feeling. It was huge inside and appears to be the place to go for steak in town. The food was great and plentiful (featured picture), the steaks were cooked perfectly with a spicy seasoning and accompanied by fresh-baked dinner rolls. After dinner we were full and ready to rest for tomorrow’s leg of the journey.
