San Antonio Texas proved to be a sharp contrast to Lake Charles Louisiana. Instead of wet, it was sunny, dry, and hot. Lake Charles was dreary, and San Antonio was full of life and activity. We toured the Alamo and bought cold drinks at the many tent shops nearby. People filled the area, shopping, visiting Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not, and socializing. The crowd chattered in English and Spanish, and many men wore Stetson hats, despite the heat. Later a military band played, perhaps for the run-up to July 4th.

A monument at the entrance to the Alamo with the names of all the people (on the other three sides) that died in the battle.

The front of the main building of the Alamo. Other buildings inside the walls of the fort are also preserved and can be toured.

Some of the outdoor grounds of the Alamo that were inside the fort remain as part of the exhibit and are very well preserved. The rest of the original Alamo grounds are now under city buildings.

We also wandered through the Riverwalk. There were tons of stores set up with all kinds of trinkets and other merchandise, while decorated pontoon boats zipped up and down the waterway, giving tours to the passengers. (See featured image)

At one juncture, a large potted plant came seemingly to life, snatching at the passersby, who jumped, laughed, or looked pissed-off. The man within the bush was disguised with black gloves and face coverings, with his limbs encircled by branches.

This guy got Paula pretty good just before we caught him on camera scaring the next couple walking by.

At dinner we tried a place we’d never been to before, Fogo de Chao. It is a Brazilian style eatery, with a huge display of cooked vegetables, fruits, hearts of palm, prosciutto, and smoked salmon, among many other offerings. Then, at the table, multiple cooks come by with varied meat on skewers, from which they offer you a slice, accompanied by sauces. It was delicious, but we couldn’t eat nearly what appeared to be expected!
