Lake Tahoe

2021 – Week 3

It was another great week in Tahoe. The wildfire smoke has continued to diminish and the temperatures are ideal. We continue to see lots of wildlife. On the weekend, Glennis and Kyle visited. We rented a speedboat, and after touring the south and western portions of the lake, we anchored in Zephyr Cove. Some of us were brave enough to expose ourselves to the chilly water. (max temp 61 degrees!) On Tuesday, we drove to Reno to pick up Margeaux and Nestor from the airport. They didn’t arrive till after 8p.m. so we went early and toured the National Automobile Museum in Reno, which was fascinating and fun. Then we hung out at a coffee shop and had dinner before heading to the airport. Naturally there were slot machines in the airport! Glennis drove up early next day. Tom, Margeaux, and Nestor went kayaking, while Glennis worked on line and Paula hung out at home. The trio did a short hike in the neighborhood in the Truckee Marsh to see some slightly smokey mountain views. That night we were joined by Kyle and had dinner at Friday’s Station Restaurant in Harrah’s. Afterwards we hit the casino. Kyle was the big winner of the night and we all had fun.

Next day we hiked the Rubicon trail on the mountain overlooking Emerald Bay. The trail started on the side of the mountain and descended to the Bay. On the beach of the Bay is a famous Swiss-designed castle, called Vikingsholm, built in the 1920s. That night the kids made an amazing dinner of chicken and vegetable shish-ka-bobs and an arugula, goat cheese, strawberry and candied pecan salad. It was awesome!

We then all decamped for Kyle and Glenny’s place in Folsom. Another gourmet meal was created by Glennis and Kyle: a warm chick-pea spinach dip and marinated pork on skewers. Next day we enjoyed a day on the patio with friends of Glenny’s and Kyle’s complete with pulled pork, homemade pasta shells and cheese, quinoa salad, watermelon, vegetables and dip. There was also a large blow-up kiddy pool to cool off in.

This morning we hiked around the very diminished, but still beautiful Folsom Lake. We will continue to enjoy family times. Margeaux and Nestor will fly home from Sacramento tonight, and we’ll return to Lake Tahoe tomorrow morning.

This is our rental cabin in Tahoe as it looks from the backyard. This part of the cabin faces the lake with awesome views. That’s Paula sitting in a chair on the deck.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-14
Chipmunks are plentiful in our backyard and all of the surrounding area.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-7
The “nuthatch” is also a common bird we see each day near the cabin.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-18
Despite the layer of smoke from wildfires that sometimes settled over the lake this past week, most of the water sport activities have continued unabated. Here is a sailboat race in progress with the local sailing club.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-2
Glennis and Kyle came for the weekend and we rented a boat to explore the lake.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-3
Paula and Kyle enjoying the ride. The smoke layer diminished the views of the distant mountains, but we still had 7 mile visibility on the water.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-4
We anchored in Zephyr Cove (southeast side of the lake) to attempt a swim. Paula and Glennis undertook to blow up a large floaty tube.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-5
The water temps in the lake hovered around 60 degrees. A bit of a shock when you first get in.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-11
Kyle is keeping Glennis from floating away.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-10
It’s a little better once you get used to it. In the background of this picture you can see the busy Zephyr Cove resort beach, a large paddle wheel boat, and other boats on moorings.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-9
Tom observing all the attempts at “swimming” at the stern of the boat.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-12
The smoke lifted for a very nice evening in the backyard.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-16
We found a segment of the “Truckee Marsh Trail” on the backside of our neighborhood. It was a beautiful short hike through undisturbed marshland with the mountains in the background.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-15
As you can see, the smoke layer was back again partly obscuring the mountains, but the immediate views around us were great.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-19
We visited the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada. In addition to having four galleries of cars from different era’s, the also had indoor streets setup that matched the time period of the cars.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-20
This car from the 1950’s had no steering wheel and no pedals. You operated it entirely by the metal “joystick” making it possible to drive from either seat. The glass bubble was handmade in a pizza oven and hinged at the back for entry.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-21
This is an all-electric car from 1914. In the front you can see the big bank of batteries in lieu of an engine. Since gas engines of that era required difficult hand cranking to start the car, making these electric cars very popular with women. This particular car set a record at the time for going 211 miles on a single charge under ideal conditions. More typically, it got 50 miles per charge. With all the hype about electric cars today, it’s hard to believe this capability existed more than 100 years ago!
Tahoe-2021-Week3-44-Nestor
Later that evening we picked up Margeaux and Nestor from the Reno airport and went kayaking on the lake the very next morning.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-28-Nestor
Thankfully, most of the wildfire smoke from the previous few days had cleared out.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-36
The water was super clear as always, and the visibility was great.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-38
If you click this picture of Nestor for the larger image, you can see a parasailer in the background.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-37
We rented the kayaks right up the street from the house and launched right from the beach.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-33
Paula was able to get this picture of the three of us right from the backyard of the house.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-27-Nestor
Tom took Margeaux and Nestor for a walk on the same Truckee Marsh Trail Paula and I found on the backside of our neighborhood.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-31-Glennis
That evening all six of us had dinner at the top floor steak restaurant at Harrah’s Casino. Later we tried our luck on some of the slot machines. The lighting was not great for this picture, but you can see how high up we are from the window.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-29-Nestor
The next day five of us (Kyle had to work) went on a hike on the Rubicon trail at Emerald Bay.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-32
It was another clear day with perfect temps.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-35-Glennis
Glennis got the good selfie of all five of us.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-39
Glennis and Mom.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-42
Another nice selfie with the bay in the background.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-41
We hiked almost 5 miles this time, providing for another excellent rehab session for Paula’s new knees.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-34-Glennis
It’s really hard not to stop and take hundreds of pictures along this trail. The scenery is spectacular.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-26-Nestor
Nestor got this excellent picture of an Osprey at the midway point on the trail.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-25-Nestor
Mom and Margeaux.

Tahoe-2021-Week3-24-Nestor
Nice picture of the four of us.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-22
Mom and Glennis. There are parts of this trail carved out of the rock with a fairly steep drop on one side.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-43
Nestor got a great close-up of one of the many chipmunks we saw on the trail.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-47
That night back at the house we had homemade chicken kabobs on the grill.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-45-Nestor
The sunset was especially beautiful that evening with the combination of cloud cover and a little smoke haze.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-49
On Friday we all went to Folsom to stay at Kyle and Glennis’s place for a couple days. They have a small problem with wild turkeys in their neighborhood which Margeaux was helping them with. Don’t worry, that’s an air rifle.
Tahoe-2021-Week3-52
We all took a walk around part of Folsom Lake on our last day together. The level of the lake is extremely low due to an error in the management of the outflows earlier this year. All the white parts of the shoreline are normally underwater.
