Lake Tahoe

2021 – Week 4

This was a very full week. In addition to doing some more hiking and kayaking, we had guests for a good part of last week. First came a visit from Marie-Paule, a friend we met through boating back in St. Augustine. We had a great two day visit, and managed to do a lot together.

After that, Glennis and Kyle came back for the weekend and this time brought their good friends Miller, Dacia, and Makai. Paula and I were pampered with superb cooking on Friday night by Miller who made crawfish etouffee. Then it was Glennis and Kyle on Saturday night who made a terrific shrimp scampi and steaks on the grill. Tom added a Caesar salad to the mix. We played some fierce games of cards each night and enjoyed each others company a lot.

Young Makai was really cute and provided a lot of 2-year old entertainment for the rest of us. Even the thick layer of smoke that blew into the Lake Tahoe basin and remained the entire weekend didn’t dampen the good time.

This week Paula got to go out in a kayak in the crystal clear water.

The view of the mountains from the water on a clear day is breathtaking.

Behind Paula are ski slope mountains. You can see several of the runs in the upper right of the picture.

We went hiking on another new trail (for us) called the Tahoe Rim Trail. From the point where we started out, this trail went 75 miles circling about 2/3rds of the lake. We only covered about 3 of those mile on this day, but it included 1,600 feet of elevation gain.

This trail had a lot of “big” views and was more technical than the previous hikes we did.

Along the way we encountered this fallen tree with an intricate pattern designed by nature.

We came across some big rock piles fairly often on this hike.

There were some steep edges off the trail, but it made for outstanding views.

We had a nice 2 day visit with our friend Marie-Paule who we originally met in our marina in St. Augustine. She now lives in California and was close enough to come see us.

On the weekend Glennis and Kyle came with their good friends Miller, Dacia, and little Makai. Unfortunately the wind shifted on Friday and blew the wildfire smoke into the Lake Tahoe basin, but we still had a great time together.

Makai loved the beach and didn’t mind the cold water at all.

  1. Thanks for the beautiful pics. It looks like all had lots of fun. Good grandparent-in-training for PR and Tom.
